What is the Difference Between a Work Permit and an Open Work Permit in Canada?

A “typical” work permit in Canada always specifies an employer. Immigrants with a standard work permit must have an LMIA or proof of employment to apply. Once they’ve been approved and granted a Canadian Open Work Permit Visa, they can only work for the employer specified on their permit.

In comparison, an open work permit in Canada is not job-specific or tied to a single employer. Open permit holders do not need to carry an LMIA or proof of an offer of employment to apply or be approved. Carriers of open work permit in Canada may apply for any job with any company (with some particular exceptions).

Under a new program, spouses or common-law partners of Canadian citizens or international students may also be eligible to apply for an open work permit in Canada. However, you must meet certain conditions to qualify. To find out if you’re eligible, book your consultation with an immigration expert from Preferred Immigration Edmonton today.
